Darien Rowers Dominate Mercer Sprint Regatta

DARIEN, Conn. – Darien rowers from the Maritime Rowing Club scooped up an array of medals at the Mercer Sprint Regatta on Saturday and Sunday in Princeton, N.J.

The Darien rowers claimed six medals, four of them gold.

“Darien rowers did a fantastic job representing the club at this event,” said varsity coach Yan Vengerovskiy of Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk. “I feel confident that we are on the right track for our spring season.”

Gold medals were snagged by Darien High School seniors Brandon Golino in the Men’s Varsity Lightweight 4+ and Gaby Kulesz in the Women’s Varsity 4X events. Kulesz also went home with a bronze medal for her performance in the Women’s Varsity 2X competition.

Sophomore Reese Gregory picked up the gold medal in Men’s Lightweight 2X race. Golino and Darien High School sophomore Andrew Orner also captured third place in that event.

Darien High School sophomores had the best showing overall with Tim Cone’s gold medal winning first-place finish in the Men’s Second Varsity 2X race and a silver medal in the Men’s Second Varsity 4X event.

The Maritime Rowing Club is dedicated to competitive and recreational rowing for all ages and abilities. Based on the scenic Norwalk River, rowing both sweep and sculling shells, Maritime is a team-oriented rowing club where all members work together to provide an enjoyable rowing experience for all. Since 1996, Maritime Rowing Club has offered rowing classes for all ages and skill levels from middle school to learn-to-row to masters competitive racing.
