DARIEN, Conn. The Darien High School rugby team defeated a strong Staples side, 10-7, in their Division I encounter in the Connecticut Schools Rugby League on Sunday.
Staples scored early to go ahead 7-0 at the end of the first quarter. Darien responded with a pair of scores for a 10-7 halftime lead.
Dariens first score came on an offensive break from a Darien scrum within the Staples 22. Strong support in the attack from the Darien forwards resulted in a try by scrum-half Christian Watson. Only minutes later, as a result of a rolling maul from the Blue Wave shortly after the restart, wing-forward Brian Love scored Dariens second try.
The second half was similar to the first, except neither team could produce points. It was a period of bruising, attritional play, with both Staples and Darien coming close to scoring but unable to find a way through the others defense. The Blue Wave was particularly energetic in the latter stages of the game as Staples threw everything it could at them.
In the B team game, Staples defeated Darien, 17-7. Again, it was a hard-fought encounter in which the Blue Wave acquitted itself well, led by John Forlizios try just before halftime, converted by Matt Hayes.
