DARIEN, Conn. The Darien American All-Stars knew they had a tall task taking on North Stamford ace Grant Stone in the District 1 Little League semifinals Wednesday. Stone did not have his best stuff, walking five. But an off-night for Stone is still better night than an on-night for most pitchers.
Darien had plenty of opportunities, but went just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Stone worked his way out of several jams, stranding eight Darien baserunners. Cord Fox singled-in the lone run as Darien fell to North Stamford, 8-1.
Darien's best opportunities came in the first two innings. A double play in the first killed a chance with runners on first and third. And Stone walked two batters in the second, but recovered to strike out the side.
North Stamford clubbed three home runs, providing all the offense they would need. Casey Brown struck out four, but took the loss on the mound.
