Darien Students From Norwalk Rowing Club Win Medals At Saratoga Contest

DARIEN, Conn. -- Darien High School students in the Maritime Rowing Club in Norwalk took home several medals at the recent Saratoga Invitational.

More than 56 teams and 1,300 entries took part in the race on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. 

Darien High School seniors Phillip Bogdanov and David Orner picked up gold medals for their performances in the Men’s Quad Final 1 and Men’s Champ Quad events. Junior Dan Cone captured third place in the Men’s Quad Final 1 and second place in the Men’s Champ Quad. DHS junior John Byrne and King School senior Riley Marsh took home the bronze medal for their finish in the Men’s Quad Final 1. 

The women’s varsity quad fared well with second-place finishes by DHS senior Gaby Kulesz in the Women’s Varsity Quad and Women’s Champ Varsity races. 

The sophomores continue to dominate early in the season with Casey Martin and Reese Gregory representing the lightweight contingent. Both scored gold medals in the Women’s Lightweight Quad and Men’s Lightweight Double Final 1 races, respectively. 

Sophomores Alexander Williams and Andrew Orner pulled a second-place finish in the Men’s Lightweight Double Final 2 event. 

The Men’s JV 8 Final 1 produced a third-place finish for DHS sophomores Mary Cate Carlo, James Hilton and Michael D’Agostino. 

The team will now focus on training for the upcoming U.S. Rowing Northeast Youth Championships to be held in Worcester, Mass., on May 21-22. The regionals will determine the team’s participation in the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships taking place in Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J., from June 10-13. 

The Maritime Rowing Club offers competitive and recreational rowing for all ages and abilities. Based on the Norwalk River, rowing both sweep and sculling shells, Maritime is a team-oriented rowing club. Since 1996, Maritime Rowing Club has offered classes from middle school to learn-to-row to master's competitive racing.
