After building an 8-2 halftime lead over Ridgefield, Darien was on cruise control Friday en route to the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference boys lacrosse championship.
The Tigers made things interesting in the second half before the top-seeded Blue Wave hung on for a 10-7 victory and their 12th league crown. It was the Blue Wave's first since 2008.
Case Matheis scored five goals and dished out two assists for Darien (17-2). Defenseman Eric Parnon had a goal and an assist and earned MVP honors. He led Darien's defense, which set the tone for the game by blanking one of the state's most high-powered offenses in the first half.
Ben Preston, Bobby Weaver, Richard Gregory and Graham Maybell also scored goals. Goalie Dylan Torey made 11 saves.
Darien led by as many as seven goals before Ridgefield trimmed the lead to three in the third quarter. Darien did not score in the final period, but its defense kept Ridgefield from cutting into the lead in the final minutes.
Darien now turns its attention to the Class M tournament, where it meets Notre Dame of West Haven on Wednesday in a first-round game. Darien has won five straight Class M championships and eight state titles overall.
