DARIEN, Conn. – Two women from Darien have helped the Amherst College softball team reach the NCAA Division III Regional softball championship.

Reilly Horan and Carly Dudzik were in the starting lineup Friday for No. 3 Amherst in a 6-4 win over No. 6 Husson. Amherst will play its next game Saturday at 9 a.m. The Massachusetts school is host of the eight-team double-elimination tournament.

Horan had a hit and an RBI and scored a run in Friday’s win. Dudzik scored a run. The women are the keystone combination for Amherst, with Horan at second and Dudzik at short.

Horan, a junior, has started every game for Amherst (35-4) and brought a .359 average into Friday’s game. She earned second team all-conference honors and went 4-for-8 with a home run and three RBIs during the conference championship series.

Dudzik,  the team’s lone senior, was named to the Capital One Academic All-District first team. She hit .314 and started 27 games. She was the conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman and is a .373 hitter for her career.

Amherst reached the NCAA regionals for the first time since 1999. The 35 wins are the most in team history.
