Darien Women's Tennis Team Crowned Adult 40 & Over National Champions

DARIEN, Conn. -- Darien's women's tennis team representing the USTA New England Section, captured the national title at the USTA League Adult 40 & Over National Championships held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.

The Darien team defeated a team from Saratoga, Calif., 4-1 in the championship match. Earlier in the day, the Darien team defeated a team from Henrico, Va., 4-1 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday. 

The team is captained by June Wang of Stamford and features Trudy Meyer of Westport, Pamela Turner of Greenwich, Sharon Femia of New Canaan, Lainie Goldstein of Nyack, N.Y., Meredith Bergman of Stamford, Melissa Lowe Edwards of Darien, Ellen Schubert of Old Greenwich and Carron Mount of New Canaan. The team plays at the Kings Highway Tennis Club. 

Established in 1980, USTA League has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year to more than 865,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league. USTA League was established to provide adult recreational tennis players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels.
