Darien YMCA Gymnasts Dominate At State Championships

DARIEN, Conn. — The Darien YMCA Gymnastics team took on the rest of Connecticut in the 2016 YMCA State Championships meet in Southington and came out on top, winning team championships for Levels 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Nine gymnasts won individual All Around (AA) titles for their age group and level. 

The first place Level 8 team was led by Nikki Carlo, who topped the podium on bars, beam, floor and AA with a superb 37.30 and placed second on vault. Gianna Cardini was the vault champ with 9.4 and took second on beam, AA and bars, where she tied with teammate Juliana Jordao. Jordao was also third on beam and floor and fourth AA. 

Lana Schmidt paced the Level 7 team champs, taking first on beam, floor and AA in the 12-14 age group. Allie Trotman was tops on bars, placed second on vault and AA and fourth on beam and floor. Tess Keating soared to first on vault with 9.35. Dorothy Browning was third on beam, second on floor and fourth on vault, bars and AA. 

In the 15s group, Jane Ogden won the beam title, took second on vault and AA and third on bars and floor. Kellie Arevalo was the vault champ with 9.3, placed third AA and second on all other events. 

Five Darien gymnasts scored over 36 points AA for the champion Level 6 team. In the 11s group, Tori Ware captured the floor and AA titles with 37.80, took second on bars, third on beam and tied Kate Wolters for first on vault. Wolters also won the bars title with 9.55 and placed second on floor and third AA. Sommer Schmidt earned second on vault and beam while Paige Domenici was third on vault and fourth on bars. 

In the 12s group, Dillan Aysseh and Lindsay Hall tied for first on vault with 9.3. Aysseh was also third on beam and second on bars and AA. Hall also placed second on beam and floor. Lizzie Canelli won the floor title with 9.4 and took second on vault and third on bars and AA. 

With all Darien gymnasts competing in the 9-11 group at Level 5, the competition was bound to be tight. The team champs posted multiple ties in the individual events, starting on vault where Nadia Borja and Sofia DeStefano tied for first; Abigail Nevin and Bella DeStefano tied for second; Melina Cardini and Nima Rahbar tied for fourth and Megan Mitchell and Caterina Pye tied for sixth. Anna Moss took third, Gabriela Pye fifth and Audrey Ridder seventh. 

Nevin was the bars champ with 9.45 while Sofia DeStefano took second, Borja third, and Moss and Gabriela Pye tied for fourth. Bella DeStefano earned fifth and Caterina Pye seventh. Borja scored a stunning 9.85 on beam for first place and also won the floor and AA titles with 38.15. Sofia DeStefano placed fourth on beam, third AA and tied twin Bella for third on floor. Nevin took second on floor, third on beam and fourth AA while Moss was fourth on floor and fifth AA. Cardini also earned sixth on floor and seventh on beam. 

Brooke Romano led the second place Level 4 team, capturing the vault, bars, beam and AA titles with 37.65 in the 11 Juniors group along with second on floor. Grace Nash placed fourth on vault while Amelia Lancaster was sixth on vault and bars. 

In the 11 Seniors group, Olivia Perkins won the bars title with 9.45, placed third AA, fourth on floor, fifth on vault and seventh on beam. Sofia Imbrogno was third on beam, fourth on bars and AA, fifth on floor and sixth on vault. 

In the 9s group, Lauren Smith flipped to first on floor with 9.75 and also won vault, placed third on bars and beam and second AA. Julia Decsi took second on vault and beam and fourth on floor and AA. Alexia Buchesky placed fourth on vault and beam and fifth on floor while Ali Kolman earned third on vault. Anna Primmer swung to 9.5 for the bars title in the 10s group, placed third on vault and AA, fourth on floor and seventh on beam. Iris West earned third on beam, fourth on vault, fifth on bars, eighth on floor and seventh AA. 

In the 12s group, Alison Enters took second on floor, sixth on bars and AA, seventh on beam and eighth on vault. Melanie Vernal placed third on vault, fourth on beam and eighth on floor while Maggie Russell was seventh on vault and eighth on beam. 

Tetyana Banaryk won the beam title with 9.3 in the 13-15 group, placed third on floor and second on vault, bars and AA. Reggie Frias earned third on vault and bars and fifth on beam. 

The youngest competitor for the Level 3 team champs was Emily McKee, who swept fourth place on all events and AA in the 7s group. The 8s group saw another round of ties on vault. Ellie Davies, Regan Famigletti, Stella Nehro and Katie Primmer tied for fourth and Sophie Root was fifth. Davies won the beam and AA titles with 37.30 along with third on bars and floor. Famigletti was also seventh on beam and second on bars. Nehro took fourth on bars while Primmer was fifth on beam and Root placed seventh on floor. 

Anna Altier led the 9s group, winning vault, beam, floor and AA with 37.90 and tying Lindy Mueller and Sophia Geffner for third on bars. Mueller was also fourth on vault, ninth on beam and eighth AA while Geffner was sixth on vault. Ava Licata placed third on beam, second on bars, floor and AA and tied Annelise Enters for second on vault. Enters also earned fifth on bars, third on floor and fourth AA. Penelope Arredondo took fifth on vault and beam, sixth on floor, seventh on bars and ninth AA. 

Abigail O’Brien posted the highest AA score of the entire meet for all levels with 38.30. She also captured first on bars with 9.6 along with second on vault, beam and floor in the 10 Seniors group. 

In the 10 Juniors, Tanner Generoso soared to the vault title with 9.7 and earned sixth on bars, fourth on beam and third on floor and AA. Julia McKee placed sixth on vault, fifth on bars and seventh on beam while Bowen Burns took fourth on vault. 

Brianna Barrientos scored an impressive 37.60 to top the 11 Juniors group, also winning on vault and bars and placing third on floor and fourth on beam. Kira McCreesh took third on vault, fourth on bars, fifth on floor and sixth AA. Theodora Tertiropoulos earned sixth on bars and seventh on beam. 

In the 11 Seniors, Kyle Latimer placed second on beam and AA, third on bars and floor and sixth on vault. Alexandra Decsi earned third on vault, fourth on bars and fifth on beam, floor and AA. 

Stephanie Carrillo was the floor champ in the 12-13 group with 9.5 as well as second on vault, fourth on beam and third on bars and AA while Meredith Marra took fifth on bars. 

The team will compete next in the YMCA Northeast Regional Championships in Manchester, N.H.
