Darien YMCA Gymnasts Flip To First At Invitational

DARIEN, Conn. -- The Darien YMCA gymnastics team resumed competition after the holidays by securing a place first-place finish at the Flippers Invitational in Glastonbury.

Grace Nash, Treasa Brown, Sofia and Isabella DeStefano, Jamie Santella, Leah Wall, Skye Greene, Lana Schmidt, Aisling Brock and Kelsey Fedorko each secured individual All-Around championships.

Darien Level 9 gymnasts Fedorko and Adnerys DeJesus tied for beam champ with a score of 9.7, then split the other titles, with Fedorko taking first on floor and All Around and DeJesus winning vault and bars.

Perri Mirabile won the Level 8 16+ group floor title with a 9.7, placed second on vault and third All-Around title.

Leading the champion Level 7 team were Aisling and Fiona Brock in the Seniors age group. Aisling Brock won the vault and All-Around titles while Fiona Brock took home the beam title, and earned second All-Around.

Lana Schmidt led the Level 6 team, winning the 12-year-old All-Around with 37.00 along with the floor title.

The high flying flippers for the champion Level 5 team were led by Leah Wall in the 9-10-year-old group, who won both beam and floor with 9.8s, along with vault and All-Around with 38.10 and was third on bars.

Darien gymnasts overflowed the podium in the 11s group, led by Skye Greene who won the floor and All-Around title with a 37.15 while Nicole Thompson won the bars and beam titles.

Sofia Pye was the vault and bars champion in the 12-year-old group, and took second on beam, floor and AA.

In the senior age groups, Kerry McDermott earned her meet high score on floor and Lily Fairleigh on beam.

The first place Level 4 team was led by Sofia DeStefano, who won all four events and AA with 37.35 in the 7-8-year-old group.

Devan Grills won the bars title for the 9-year-old group with 9.55 and placed second AA.  

Isabella DeStefano won the 10-year-old Juniors All-Around title with 37.25 along with first place finishies on  bars and floor.   

Jane Tortorella won the floor title and placed third on beam, seventh on bars and fourth All-Around.

Saskia Chermayeff won the beam title with 9.7 before an injury took her out of the meet.

Jamie Santella swept the titles in the 11-year-old Juniors, winning all four events and the All-Around with 37.85.

The Level 3 contingent was small but equally successful. In the 9-year-old Juniors, Anna Primmer won the floor title with 9.6 and was second on vault.

Grace Nash won the vault and All-Around titles for the 10-year-old Juniors, scoring 36.95 and placed second on beam and third on bars and floor.

Treasa Brown was the 10-year-old Seniors beam and All-Around champ scoring 37.05.
