Darien YMCA Gymnasts Soar At Southern League Championships

DARIEN, Conn. -- A snowy day didn’t slow the Darien YMCA gymnasts down at the 2015 Southern Connecticut League Championship meet held recently at the Wilton YMCA.

The Level 4s and 5s won the team championships and six gymnasts won All-Around titles for their age groups and levels, including Nika Sibley, Sofia and Isabella DeStefano, Jamie Santella, Leah Wall and Skye Greene.

The Level 6 to 9 session was postponed due to the weather.

The victorious Level 5s were led by Leah Wall, who won three out of four events and the AA for the 9-10s age group, including scoring 9.8 on beam. Tori Ware scored the other title, capturing bars with a 9.7 and placing second on beam, floor and AA as well as third on vault. Sommer Schmidt took fourth on beam, vault and AA and fifth on bars. Paige Domenici was third on beam, fourth on floor and fifth on vault. Kate Wolters earned third on bars and beam before being injured.

In the 11s, Skye Greene took first outright on bars and AA with 37.75, tied Holly McGoldrick for first on beam, tied Nicole Thompson for first on floor and placed second on vault. McGoldrick also won the vault title with 9.5, took fifth on bars and second on floor and AA. Thompson also earned second on beam, third on vault and AA and tied for fourth on bars with Lizzie Canelli, who was also was third on beam, sixth on floor and fourth on vault and AA. Lindsay Hall placed fifth on vault, floor and AA, sixth on beam and tied Megan Cutler for 2nd on bars. Cutler was also seventh on beam and ninth AA. Dillan Aysseh earned third on bars, fourth on floor, fifth on beam and sixth on vault and AA.

The 12 and up group was led by Alexa Carrero, who won the bars title outright with 9.55, tied for first on floor and placed second on vault and AA. Lindsey Wallach was second on floor, third on bars and fourth AA.

The first place Level 4 team was led by Sofia DeStefano in the 8-9 age group, who was the champ on vault, floor and AA with 37.80, placed third on bars and tied for second on beam with Melina Cardini. Cardini also placed fourth on vault and floor, third AA and also tied Iris West for second on bars. West was also second on vault and fourth on beam and AA. Devan Grills won the bars and beam titles and placed third on vault and second AA. Anna Primmer earned fourth on bars while Ali Kolman took third on beam.

The 10s group was topped by Isabella DeStefano, who soared to first on vault, floor and AA with 38.05, tied for second with Gabriela Pye on beam and tied for fourth on bars with Nima Rahbar. Gabriela also placed second on bars and AA and tied Rahbar, Saskia Chermayeff and Katelyn Secor for fifth on vault. Secor was also tenth on bars, while Rahbar also earned seventh on floor and AA and tied Emma Kelly for sixth on beam. Kelly was also fifth on floor, eighth on bars and tenth on vault and AA.

Also in the 10s, Megan Mitchell was third on vault, bars and AA, sixth on floor and tied Sofia Imbrogno for fifth on beam. Imbrogno also earned fourth on vault and eleventh on floor. Caterina Pye placed second on floor, fourth on beam, eighth on vault and sixth on bars and AA. Annie Bingle took second on vault, fifth on bars, eighth AA, tenth on floor and tied for tenth on beam with Saskia Chermayeff who was also seventh on bars and eleventh AA. Jane Tortorella placed third on beam, fourth on floor, ninth on bars and AA and eleventh on vault. Audrey Ridder placed eleventh on beam while Treasa Brown earned her meet high scores on beam and floor.

Jamie Santella scored 9.75 on both bars and beam on the way to winning those titles along with floor and AA (38.20) and placing third on vault in the 11s group. Emma Neaderland was second on all four events and AA with 38.10. Lucy Collins tied Neaderland on floor, won the vault title, placed third on beam and AA and sixth on bars. Melanie Vernal placed seventh on vault and floor and ninth on bars. Alison Enters was fourth on beam and tenth on vault while Maggie Russell earned her meet high scores on beam and floor.

In the 12 and up group, Sofia Fea was the beam champ, took second on vault and AA, third on bars and tied for fifth on floor with Dylan Ross, who was also fourth on vault. Tetyana Banaryk scored sixth on beam and seventh on floor.

The Level 3s earned the third place team trophy.

Lauren Smith won the beam title for the 6-8 age group, placed second on vault, fourth on bars and floor and third AA.

In the 9s, Alannah Morris was seventh on both vault and beam while Emma Pratt earned fifth on beam.

In the Junior 10s, Olivia Perkins placed fourth on beam, sixth on vault, seventh on floor and fifth on bars and AA. Kyle Latimer earned 8th on vault, fifth on beam, seventh AA and tied for fourth on bars with Alexandra Decsi.

Brooke Romano led the Darien Senior 10s, placing second on beam, third on bars, fourth AA, ninth on vault, and tying for seventh on floor with Amelia Lancaster. Lancaster was also second on vault, sixth on bars and seventh AA. Grace Nash took second on bars, third on floor, seventh on vault and sixth AA. Kira McCreesh was fourth on bars and tenth on vault and floor.

Competing in the 11s, Amelia Kuhn placed fourth on vault, sixth on floor and seventh on bars. Nika Sibley won the floor and AA titles with 37.25 in the 12 and up group, while also earning third on vault, second on bars and fifth on beam. Alexandra Bowman was the beam champ with 9.35 and placed second on vault and sixth AA. Reggie Frias scored 9.4 to win the vault title and placed second on floor. Meredith Marra earned her meet high score on vault.
