Darien Hockey Team Earns Honor From County Sports Commission

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The Fairfield County Sports Commission today announced its 2015 Sports Persons of the Year in each of the 16 communities the Commission directly serves. The local sports honorees will be recognized at the 11th annual Sports Night awards dinner, Monday, Oct. 19 at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich at 6 pm.

The Darien High School boys hockey team, which won the Division I championship, was named the Sports Person of the Year for Darien by the Fairfield County Sports Commission.

In each of the 16 communities, a committee headed by a local town representative of the Commission, selected a Sports Person of the Year. Each winner was deemed to have had the most positive impact in their sports community from August 2014 through August 2015.

The Sports Persons of the Year are:

  • BRIDGEPORT -- the late Ken Shepard, former Bridgeport Bluefish general manager
  • DARIEN -- Darien High Boys Hockey Team, Division I state champions
  • EASTON -- Barlow High Girls Softball Team, School record 17 wins and SWC runners-up
  • FAIRFIELD -- Charlie and Tim Kane, Warde High star wrestlers, Class L and State Open champions
  • GREENWICH -- Catherine McEvoy, Greenwich High golf star, Connecticut Women's Amateur Champion
  • MONROE -- Monroe U10-11 Little League Softball Team, State champions
  • NEW CANAAN -- Zach Allen, New Canaan High football standout, Gatorade State Player of Year
  • NEWTOWN -- the late Joe Mailloux, longtime sports community leader & coach
  • NORWALK -- Eric van der Els, Brien McMahon High distance runner, All-American
  • SHELTON -- Garrett and Peter Gintoli, Team USA Deaflympics hockey, bronze medalists
  • STAMFORD -- Chordale Booker, USA Boxing National Champion
  • STRATFORD --Bunnell Boys Basketball Team, Class L state champions
  • TRUMBULL -- Cross Cannone, Trumbull High wrestling star, State Open and Class LL champion
  • WESTON -- Carla and Sean Welsh, Weston Basketball Association & WHS Boosters Club
  • WESTPORT -- Mike Paliotta, National Hockey League debut
  • WILTON -- Wilton High Girls Basketball Team, Class LL state champions

The Fairfield County Sports Commission is a 501c3 non-profit organization that is the one-stop resource for the sports community in the area, with a mission of promoting fitness and personal development through sports. The Commission, with the exception of the executive director, is an all-volunteer group that gives financial support and its resources back to its communities, primarily focused on the 110,000 school age youngsters it can reach with its fitness awareness education programs under its Chelsea Cohen Fitness Academy.
