Chu, 31, is a forward on the U.S. Women’s Hockey team. She will play for the fourth time as a member of the U.S. team when the Olympics begin Thursday, Feb. 6, in Sochi, Russia.

The three-minute, 35-second video is titled “Raising an Olympian: Julie Chu” and is part of a series that salutes mothers who saw potential in their children to become exceptional athletes.

“One of our family philosophies,’’ Julie says in the video, “is modeled after Chu. Commitment. Honor. Unity.”

Julie talks about how she got her start in hockey, which began when she went to games for her brother, Richard. “I saw a spark in her eyes every time she put on her hockey skates,’’ Miriam says. “We wanted to give her that opportunity.”

Chu attended Choate Rosemary Hall in high school and played for Harvard University. She is the first woman to help the U.S. win five gold medals in the Women’s World Championships. Chu has won two silver medals and one bronze medal with her previous Olympic teams.
