DARIEN, Conn. – In a year already filled with highlights, the triple-gold medal performance by Darien High School’s Nick Lombardo at the Class L state indoor track and field championship ranks as one the most memorable for the Blue Wave star.
Lombardo won the high jump, long jump and the lead-off leg on the 4 x 200 relay to help the Blue Wave win the team championship. Lombardo was selected The Darien Daily Voice Athlete of the Month.
“I think my favorite part about that night was not just the individual wins but the entire team, both girls and boys, being so successful,’’ he said. “We were both able to enjoy a victory at the Class L meet.”
Lombardo made his last year, when he finished second in the long jump and fourth in the high jump at the Class L outdoor championships. He took it to another level this year, however, especially in the high jump. He jumped 6 feet, 6 inches earlier in the year to set a school record.
“To be honest I am a little surprised at how much I have improved in high jump,’’Lombardo said. “I started to high jump freshman year, but I had trouble with my knee so I decided to not do it and never ended jumping in a meet. My sophomore year, my coach recommended I try it again. And I think it was the best advice I have taken so far because it's now my best event.”
Lombardo’s big track season came on the heels of a spectacular football season. He caught the game-winning touchdown pass on the final play in a win over Trinity Catholic and had three receptions for touchdowns in the Thanksgiving Day win over archrival New Canaan. He has been named one of the captains for next year’s football team.
“To be honest I hope I remember all of them forever,’’ Lombardo said. “Both the football and track accomplishments have become things that I am very proud of and I wish to build upon. I really cannot pick a favorite.”
With his track and football success, Lombardo has options to consider for college. “I guess I'd say I am exploring my options,” he said. “I believe that I will end up doing whichever I believe is the best fit.”
