Stamford North Little League Scholarship Fund Reaches Halfway Mark

STAMFORD, Conn. -- A fund to benefit college-bound graduates of the Stamford North Little League has collected more than half of its $10,000 goal, with more to come in the form of a recently-announced matching donation.

More than $5,000 has been received by the Stamford North Little League to fund the Joe "Junie" DeLeo Scholarship Fund, an annual award that will honor the longtime resident and local baseball legend who recently celebrated his 50th year helping kids play youth baseball in Stamford.

The Stamford North Little League recently voted to match all funds received by Jan. 1, 2018, up to a total of $10,000. This will assure the scholarship will be in place for at least 10 years.

DeLeo, a standout left-handed pitcher for Stamford High School and the local American Legion teams in the 1950s, has coached or managed his Clairol team to 17 league championships in the Springdale and Stamford North Little Leagues since 1967.

All money received will help fund an annual $1,000 scholarship for a local high school senior who is a graduate of Stamford North, Springdale or North Stamford Little League, and has been accepted to an accredited college, university or technical school for the upcoming fall.

A tax-deductible donation can be made at https://tinyurl.com/juniedeleo. More information on the scholarship is available on the Stamford North Little League website.
