“The Navigators Stamford KIC IT race weekend is not only an important fundraiser for Kids in Crisis, but also a tremendous way for us to get the word out about what we do to our community,” says Shari Shapiro, executive director of the Cos Cob-based Kids in Crisis.

“The funds raised go directly to the programs and services provided free of charge by Kids in Crisis to children and families throughout the state.”

She also praised the support of athletes, fundraisers, and corporate sponsors.

According to Race Director Jon Stellwagen, top competition returns to the signature Olympic distance race, with Full Throttle Endurance Racing entering as defending team champions and the strong favorites.

On the individual side for the women, last year’s winner Elizabeth Pratt returns to defend her title, while Brigitte Paulick looks to be a strong threat. For the men, perennial favorite and USA Triathlon Masters Athlete of the Year Chris Thomas looks to add a third Navigators Stamford KIC IT Triathlon title to his repertoire.

The entire weekend benefits Kids in Crisis Connecticut’s only free, round-the-clock agency providing emergency shelter, crisis counseling and community educational programs for children of all ages and families dealing with domestic violence, mental health and family problems, substance abuse, economic difficulties and more.

Since its founding in 1978, Kids in Crisis has helped more than 124,000 Connecticut children and families; last year, more than 6,000 children and families received assistance from the organization.

The weekend features a kids triathlon, Olympic and sprint triathlons, and new 5k and 10k runs.

On Saturday, children ages 6 to 13 get in on the action with the fifth annual Navigators Stamford KIC IT Kids Triathlon.

On Sunday, adults take center stage in the eighth annual Navigators Stamford KIC IT Olympic Triathlon (.9-mile swim, 24.8-mile bike, 6.2-mile run) and second annual Navigators Stamford KIC IT Sprint Triathlon (0.5-mile swim, 13.9-mile bike, 3.2-mile run).

These USAT-sanctioned races are contested over courses in Long Island Sound and throughout the countryside of North Stamford and downtown Stamford.
