DARIEN, Conn. – Wilton’s Skip Latella has worked extensively with golfers around the country, most recently with some who have physical limitations. Now, he’s able to do his work much closer to home.

Latella has joined Tri-Fit Custom Golf in Darien to help golfers with their fitness, flexibility and muscle coordination. After years of taking his physical improvement show on the road, Latella finally has a base close to home.

Latella joined Tri-Fit when it opened in the summer. Tri-Fit recently completed building a biomechanical lab at its facility at 365 Boston Post Road. Using Latella’s Flexor system, golfers will notice increased flexibility, balance and coordination by building a more stable swing foundation.

“Even able-bodied golfers have balance issues,’’ Latella said. “Some of the results we’re seeing are rewarding. Golf is the motivational tool that gets them to do the work.”

Latella said he recently started working with a 75-year-old golfer who has become more fluid, flexible and stronger. “Some other people his age that were playing had to take time off because their body had broken down,’’ he said.

"I want golfers to feel better about playing,'' Latella said. "Flexor affords them a way to improve 'quality of life.'.  For Para golfers and for the seniors, it’s awesome to get them up and out.”

Last year, Latella’s training helped the United States win medals in archery in the ParaOlympics in London. He has also been working with the Manhattan VA in New York and with Westchester Country Club and its head pro, John Kennedy, to help disabled golfers.

Flexor is a sport-specific motor learning program that gives real-time feedback and impact on performance. There are no weights, just unique neuro muscular movement patterns, performed in “sport specific” positions, i.e. golf, that produce more coordinated biomechanical positions.  These movements in turn, help reduce physical limitations that present in the swing positions.

In three 15-minute workouts a week, Latella said his Flexor system can improve performance by enhancing the brain/body connection. The results of his work with other golfers,  members of the Duke, Notre Dame golf teams and Fred Couples during his heyday, para track and field athletes at Penn State and the U.S. para-archery team are testaments to his success.

Latella still does some traveling, but his expertise with para-archery competitors and golfers is growing in Connecticut.

“That was part of the plan, to do more in my backyard and grow it in Fairfield County,’’ Latella said. “I think there is more we can do in terms of helping lacrosse and tennis players. The methodology works - move to improve. Doing it here in my backyard is a lot more enjoyable.”
