Even worse, a snowstorm may hit this weekend as well.
The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey, and southeast New York.
For Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, the region will see bitter cold temperatures, averaging 15 to 20 degrees below normal. Subzero wind chills are likely Saturday night through Tuesday morning, too.
Also, there is the potential for a developing coastal storm to bring heavy snow to the area Saturday into Saturday night. The weather service said the path is still uncertain, which will determine the amount of snowfall.
Wednesday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 22 degrees and wind chill values between zero and 10.
Temperatures will drop tonight to 3 degrees with wind chill values between -5 and -10.

On Thursday, expect another sunny and cold day, with a high near 16 but wind chill values between -10 and zero.
It will be even colder Thursday night, with a low around 1.
On Friday, there is a 20 percent chance of snow after noon. It will be partly sunny and cold, with a high near 19. At night, temps will fall to about 9.
There is a 50 percent chance of snow on Saturday, with mostly cloudy skies a high near 23. The temperature will drop to 6 degrees overnight.
It will be sunny and cold Sunday — New Year's Eve — with a high near 17 during the day and dropping to about 4 by night-time.
New Year's Day will be sunny and cold, with a high near 19 and night-time low of about 4.
The state's Severe Cold Weather Protocol has been activated and will remain in effect through Tuesday, Jan. 2.
The protocol directs staff from the state Departments of Emergency Services and Environmental Protection, Social Services, Mental Health and Addiction Services, and Housing, to coordinate with 2-1-1 and Connecticut's network of shelters to ensure that the state's most vulnerable residents are protected from the severe cold.
“With bitter cold temperatures expected over the next couple of days, we must all take precautions and continue to protect the most vulnerable among us,” Gov. Dannel Malloy said. “If anyone is in need of shelter, call 2-1-1 to find the nearest available location. I also encourage local communities to consider opening warming centers or other facilities to assist those in need.”
