FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — The calendar may say that spring is a week away, but a powerful blizzard is heading straight for Fairfield County.

The forecast from the National Weather Service is calling for up to a foot-and-a- half of snow as a nor'easter slams the region from late Monday until late Tuesday.

There is a Blizzard Watch in place for coastal Fairfield County and a Winter Storm Watch for interior Fairfield County.

The forecast calls for 12 to 18 of snow to fall in what would be the region's worst storm of this winter.

The heavy snowfall could come at a rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour. Winds will be 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 60 mph possible at times.

Winds will be strong enough to knock down tree limbs and cause power outages.

Travel conditions will be dangerous, with accumulating snow, poor visibility and strong winds. Whiteout conditions are possible.

The storm will begin before midnight Monday and the snow continue into late Tuesday.

The weekend is a time to prepare — get the shovel out, gas up the snowblower and make a run for food, ice melt and medications.

Before the storm, it will be sunny on Sunday and Monday, with daytime highs near 30 and overnight lows in the teens.

Flurries could begin Monday afternoon, with the storm hitting closer to midnight.

Residents across Fairfield County should be prepared for school and work cancellations, parking bans and travel difficulties.
