The Darien location of the popular food and ice cream chain opened on the Post Road near the Norwalk border in 1974. The restaurant closed Tuesday, removing all signs from the building and the site.
The Friendly's chain of restaurants has been in operation since 1935, when it opened its first restaurant in Springfield, Mass. Since then, the chain has expanded along the entire East Coast. In October 2011, the company filed for bankruptcy and has since closed more than 100 locations.
Although diners will not be able to eat at the Friendly's anymore, there are still many restaurants on that stretch of Post Road near the Norwalk border, including Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza, Duchess, Rory's and Matsuri.
Calls to J&B Restaurant Partners, which owns the Darien location along with several others in Connecticut, were not returned.
