Darien Sidewalk Sales Draw Big Business

DARIEN, Conn. – Along the Post Road in Darien tables and tents set up, with crowds of people wandering from venue to venue looking for great deals. More than 80 businesses are participating in this year’s Darien Chamber of Commerce's Sidewalk Sales.

The annual event kicked off Thursday and will continue through Saturday. For shoppers, it provides an opportunity to find sales at many of their favorite stores, with some offering discounts of as much as 70 percent.

Darien resident Kristin Farrell was under a tent, offering passersby samples of her newly launched organic cookie mix, In a Jar. She said it has been a good opportunity to introduce people to her business.

“It’s been great, there’s been really great traffic. I think it’s going well,” Farrell said. “There have been a lot of good conversations. It’s all about getting your name out there, and this is a great way to do that and meet people that I wouldn’t normally have an opportunity to meet.”

Maplewood at Darien, a senior living community that will be opening in the fall, saw the Sidewalk Sales as a good way to become involved in the community. As shoppers wandered from store to store in the hot weather, Maplewood’s Executive Director Jeanette Perlman and Community Outreach Director Kristin Hocker were handing out lemonade and raffle tickets.

“We like to get involved in our communities. We thought that this would be a great way for us to introduce ourselves to people, and to feel like a part of the town and support the community,” Hocker said.

Scattered throughout the sales are special family events, including face painting, a home run challenge, BB the Bluefish mascot, Zumba demonstrations, live music, potato sacks, slides, bouncy castles, obstacle courses and free gift bags and balloons.
