DARIEN, Conn. – Meredith and Greg Scheine wanted to put a new spin on the corner candy store when they opened Chocolate Works of Darien in the Goodwives Shopping Center.

The Stamford couple opened the doors to their store Monday. It is the first Connecticut location for Chocolate Works , which has stores in Long Island, Manhattan and New Jersey. The store offers an enormous selection of chocolates and candies, as well as custom creations and a spot to host parties and events.

Greg said that what really sets Chocolate Works apart from other candy stores are the parties.

“We bring everyone in for an interactive experience. Kids can become chocolatiers for the day. We show them how we make the chocolate and explain a little about the history of chocolate,” he said.

People hosting their events can see how the tempering machine is used to make dark and milk chocolate. They can then select a mold, such as an animal or a baseball player, from the collection and pour the chocolate in before putting it in the fridge to cool. After that, they can decorate their creation with food coloring to make a delicious work of art. There is also an enrobing machine, where party guests can place items such as pretzels on a conveyor belt to be covered in chocolate and then decorated with sprinkles and other treats.

Meredith worked as a teacher for many years before deciding to open the Chocolate Works franchise. She said that she can see customers’ moods brighten when they walk in the store.

“We thought this would be a fun, comfortable place where families can come buy gifts, have parties, and have a really unique, interactive experience,” she said.

The shelves and display cases are stocked with a wide range of truffles, assortments, platters and chocolate-covered snacks. They create custom molds for special occasions and for organizations, youth teams and corporations. They can make logos, business cards and book covers out of delicious chocolate.

Chocolate Works celebrated its opening in Darien with a ribbon cutting Wednesday with the Darien Chamber of Commerce. They are also planning on hosting a large grand opening celebration this fall.
