DARIEN, Conn. – The Darien Police Department is once again presenting “Straight Talk” about heroin and prescription drugs. It will be at 8 p.m. June 10 at The Depot.

Medications that are in the same family as heroin – codeine, morphine, oxycodone, Vicodin, Demerol and Dilaudid – are gaining in popularity among teens and young adults, and they are not too hard to come by, according to the police.

At this event, police officers will discuss the commonality of these types of drugs. According to department officials, one in 12 high school seniors has taken opioids during the last year, one in 15 who takes these drugs will likely try heroine within the next 10 years and 62 percent of teens who take these drugs say they do so because they are easy to obtain from their parents’ medicine cabinets.

All of these drugs can be taken in many forms, besides just swallowing the pills. They may be crushed and snorted, inhaled, injected, or smoked.

Parents and caregivers who have students attending middle school, high school, or college may find this meeting beneficial. The event is free, but registration is required due to limited seating. To sign up, email to
