STAMFORD, Conn. — The community is rallying to help the family of a 33-year-old Stamford man who drowned last week in Stamford Harbor.

Rasheed D. Hines died Friday "in an unfortunate accident due to drowning," his family said in a post on a GoFundMe page to raise money for the funeral expenses.

"Rasheed was a smart, free-spirited, talented artist who made the Dean's List several times," the post says. He studied graphic design and cartooning at J.M. Wright Tech School and the New York School of Visual Arts, where he earned a bachelor's degree in cartooning.

"Rasheed has been drawing since he was 4 years old, which he spent most of his time doing," the post says. "He helped to raise his nephews and nieces. He enjoyed going for nature walks, drawing, and speaking and fighting on behalf of underdogs."

As of Wednesday, the family had raised $2,500 to go  toward the burial services.

"I LOVE YOU RASHEED ! FOREVER ! So much Talent !!! You will be remembered everyday !!!" said one donor.

Hines waded into the water in the harbor’s East Branch at about 11 a.m. Friday and began to struggle, police Capt. Richard Conklin said. Several witnesses in the Harbor Drive area tried to help as others called 911, he said.

His body was pulled from the water about an hour later, and he was pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital.

Conkling said police were continuing to investigate the case.
