DARIEN, Conn. -- Darien artist Stan Pastore won Best in Show for his work "Old Yella," a watercolor painting, at the Darien Art Center’s 56th Annual Art Show & Sale.

The DAC received 275 entries from over 170 artists from kindergarten age to adult for the summer show.

This year’s judge, MoMA instructor Larissa Bailiff, said her job was both a pleasure and a challenge, especially across the work of the high school age group, “whose drawings and photographs were all impassioned, beautiful, and original.”

Bailiff was particularly pulled in by the strong colors, evocation of textures, incredible rendering of light and compelling composition of Pastore’s "Old Yella."

“I felt like I was looking at an early Edward Hopper or an Andrew Wyeth painting,” she said of Pastore's work.

This year’s show featured 14 categories and 43 winners.

Adult first place winners included Burr Tweedy for Black and White Photography, Joyce Grasso for Color Photography, Dan Scheckler for Drawing/Pastel & Graphics, Cynthia Whalen for Mixed Media, Kathleen Weinstock for Oil, Peter Thoren for Acrylics, Annie Archibald for Sculpture, and Rebecca Ashcraft for Watercolor.
