Winsted resident Anthony Hunt waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty in Hartford Federal Court on Thursday to one count of possession with intent to distribute and distribution of, heroin. The arrest comes as part of an ongoing statewide crackdown targeting narcotics dealers who sell opioids that lead to fatal incidents.

According to court documents, shortly before 5:45 p.m. on June 2, Connecticut State Police troopers responded to a family-owned boat in Washington, Conn., where there was a report of a teenager in cardiac arrest. First responders attempted to revive the 17-year-old, though they were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead on the boat.

Police seized various drug and non-drug evidence from the boat, including suspected heroin, miscellaneous pharmaceutical pills and an iPhone. The Connecticut Medical Examiner determined that the teenager died from toxicity associated with a number of controlled substance, including heroin and Xanax.

The investigation into the fatal overdose - including witness interviews and analysis of the seized iPhone found that Hunt sold heroin and Xanax to him between May 17 and June 1 last year, and that the teen had traveled to Winsted to purchase the drugs the day before his death.

Hunt was arrested on a criminal complaint on March 22. He will remain released on $50,000 bond until his sentencing on Dec. 12, when he will face a maximum of up to 20 years in prison.
