Andy Pena, a freshman at Darien High School, died Friday night in Boston, where he was on a trip with his family. Pena was reportedly on a treadmill when he collapsed and later died.
In a note to parents, Darien High principal Dan Haron said two support centers will be open at the school throughout Monday to help students deal with the loss. The centers will be staffed by school social workers and psychologists. In addition, Kathy Gilbert, the school social worker, and Paul Ribeiro, the director of guidance, will visit each of Pena's class to provide additional support to students.
Pena was on the school's swim team and was in Boston to attend a swim meet. A Facebook page has been set up in Pena's memory.
