Darien Teens Wrap Up Fundraiser at the Depot

There's a real Santa's Workshop at the Depot: You can bring your Christmas gifts to be wrapped by Darien kids in exchange for a donation to support the Depot's activities.

"It's a great opportunity to get together during the holidays and help the community," said Brin Gasparino, a junior at Darien High School and member of the Depot's Student Governing Board.

The fundraiser has been running since Saturday and ends Wednesday night. Gasparino said it can get pretty hectic. She herself wrapped 15 to 20 presents in an hour-and-a-half. Many kids come in multiple times to pitch in.

"It's really nice to get into the Christmas spirit," said Kammie Kirby, another Darien High student. She said they take precautions to make sure presents don't get switched. "We're very efficient and careful, and double check everything."

So far, the kids have raised more than $1,000 for the Depot's activities, which include dances and programs to keep kids from risky behavior. According to Depot Program Director Janice Marzano, some people leave donations of up to $100.

Alex Bruno, who showed his speed by wrapping a giant present in only a couple minutes, said, "I think it's been very popular this year. We've got a lot more gifts, which is nice because it means people are really utilizing the service."

Darien neighbors who come in are appreciative of the service. Dottie Kiggins, who has 14 grandchildren, said it was nice to have help. "I think it's wonderful. It's a very nice thing to do for people who are rushed like we are."

You can take your presents to the Depot, 45 Heights Road, between 3 and 8 p.m. Wednesday to get them wrapped.
