FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Gas prices in Connecticut continue to rise along with the rest of the nation, with the Nutmeg State moving up to have the 10th highest prices in the country, according to AAA Northeast.

As of Monday, Connecticut gas prices are $2.68 per gallon, 2 cents higher than this time last week and 21 cents higher than this time last year. The average gas price in the United States is $2.54 per gallon, a penny higher than last week and 23 cents higher than this point last year.

Gas prices in Fairfield County continue to be well above the rest of the state. The average price in lower Fairfield County is $2.78 per gallon, and $2.76 per gallon in the greater Bridgeport area, according to AAA.

Just a bit north in the New Haven/Meriden area, average gas prices are $2.65 per gallon. Gas is $2.66 per gallon in the greater Hartford area, $2.72 per gallon in the New London/Norwich area, and $2.65 per gallon in the Windham/Middlesex area.

According to AAA, average gas prices have dropped as much as 20 cents in January since 2014. However this year, prices are a nickel more than they were on Jan. 1, an indication that 2018 may be more expensive than last year. Prices continue to rise along with demand and global inventories.

The lowest average gas prices are found in Texas and Missouri, where a gallon will go for $2.29 and $2.30, respectively. Hawaii continues to have the highest prices at $3.36, followed by California at $3.19.
