Connecticut is reporting the first flu-related fatality of the season, the state Department of Public Health announced.

The latest update from the Public Health Department reports that 197 people in Connecticut have tested positive for flu so far this season, and "one influenza-associated death in an individual greater than 65 years of age has been reported."

No further details such as age or hometown were reported on the victim.

The latest statistics for the state are through Dec. 2.

In Connecticut, influenza activity has also been increasing during the last few weeks:
  • Influenza A (H3N2) viruses appear to predominate within the US and Connecticut.
  • Statewide emergency department visits attributed to the “fever/flu syndrome” are continuing to increase and are now at 5.2 percent.
  • The percentage of outpatient visits with influenza-like illness has continued above the level of 1 percent statewide.
  • The percentage of unscheduled hospital admissions due to pneumonia are increasing and are now approaching a level of 4 percent statewide.
  • A total of 77 hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza admitted between Aug. 27 and Dec. 2 have been reported to date, with the one influenza-associated death.

A total of 197 influenza positive laboratory tests have been reported during the current season, with influenza found in seven of eight counties:

  • Fairfield with 59 cases
  • Hartford with 59 cases
  • New Haven with 34 cases
  • New London with 23 cases
  • Tolland with 9 cases
  • Litchfield with 5 cases
  • Middlesex with 4 cases and
  • Windham with 4 cases.

"It is time to obtain your flu vaccine and take other steps to prevent influenza-related illness and hospitalization," the state Department of Public Health says.
