Darien Police: Water Company Impostors Strike 2 Homes On Same Street

DARIEN, Conn. — Water company impostors gained access to the homes of two elderly residents on the same street in the past week and burglarized the second home, Darien police said Tuesday.

The second "distraction burglary" took place at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, on Hollow Tree Ridge Road near Boston Post Road in Darien, police said.

The victim was an elderly female resident, police said.

The two suspects posed as water company employees, police said. While one suspect kept the woman occupied, a second suspect stole numerous items from the second floor of the residence, police said.

In another incident on the same street, at 6:30 p.m. July 16, three men attempted to commit a similar burglary at another residence on Hollow Tree Road, police said.

The elderly resident told police that two men entered his residence without permission claiming to be from the water company. The men split up inside the house and began turning on numerous faucets, police said.

Upon being asked to leave, the men fled through the front door, and met up with a third suspect on the side of the house, police said. Nothing was reported stolen.

The suspects were described by police:

  • Suspect #1: an 18- to 20-year-old Hispanic man with a slim build, 5-foot-9, and wearing a dirty dark green shirt, jeans and black shoes.
  • Suspect #2: a Hispanic man in his late 30s, heavy set, muscular, 5-foot-7, with a round face, goatee and short hair and wearing eyeglasses, a black shirt, and black pants.
  • Suspect #3: A white man, short and wearing a blue plaid shirt.

These incidents were similar to one in June on Ledge Road. An elderly resident reported that two men claiming to be from the water company entered her home and stole cash and valuables, police said.

Police recommend that residents be on the lookout for these kinds of crimes. Always ask for identification of anyone wishing to enter your home, and call the agency to confirm that there are legitimate workers in the area.
