Darien Resident Killed In Helicopter Crash

DARIEN, Conn. — Darien resident Tighe Sullivan was one of two people killed in a helicopter crash in Pennsylvania on Tuesday night.

Sullivan, 51, a Darien resident for 17 years, was a founder, partner and chief operating officer of Fraser Sullivan Investment Management in New York City. He is survived by his wife, former Darien selectman Callie Sullivan, and their three children.

Three people were aboard when the helicopter crashed in a heavily wooded area in Tobyhanna, Pa., near Mount Pocono, police said. Sullivan was killed along with William Ellsworth, 52, of Califon, N.J., who was piloting the helicopter. The third person on board, Stephen Barral of Bernardsville, N.J., was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

The helicopter was carrying its passengers from a golf outing in Elmira, N.Y., to the metropolitan New York area, police said. Before the crash, one passenger was dropped off at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. The helicopter then encountered bad weather and was attempting to land at Mount Pocono Airport when it crashed, police said.

Mount Pocono Regional Police received the report of the missing helicopter at about 10 p.m. Tuesday. They tracked its location using the GPS signal from a cellphone call Barral had made right before the crash.
