DARIEN, Conn. -- A Darien woman's iPad was stolen and later returned to her after the thief sold it on Craigslist, according to police.

The theft occurred at the Country Club of Darien on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 10, police said. The owner of the iPad, a 41 year-old Darien woman, plugged it in to charge at the snack bar and left without it. When she realized she had forgotten it and returned, she was told that it was picked up by a young girl with black hair, according to police.

The woman was able to remotely clear her data from the iPad and leave a message on the screen, saying that it was stolen and including her cell phone number. She received a call from a Norwalk man Monday afternoon. He told her that he had bought the iPad off Craigslist for $220, and agreed to meet her at the Norwalk Police Department to give it back.

According to Darien police, the man who bought the iPad said he had seen it advertised on Craigslist Sunday night. He exchanged emails with the seller and purchased it in the parking lot of Best Buy in Norwalk Monday morning. He said that the seller identified himself as "John" and described him as a skinny white male, about 5-feet, 10-inches tall with a light beard and driving a white van. They negotiated the price and completed the transaction, and when the buyer powered up the iPad he saw the message and contacted the owner.

Darien police are following up on the incident.
