DARIEN, Conn. --  A Darien man was arrested early Sunday morning after police said he refused to leave a bar.

Robert Winter, 22, was charged with interfering with an officer. He was released on a promise to appear in court Aug. 20.

Police were called to Ernie's Restaurant on Tokeneke Road around 1:40 a.m., Sunday, on a report of a patron refusing to leave the bar. Police said they arrived to find about 20 people in the bar and the bartender visibly upset and crying. She said that Winter had ordered a couple of pitchers of beer for his friends and when he came to the bar to close out he was upset that there were two separate tabs to be paid.

Police said that Winter began arguing with the bartender and refused to leave when asked repeatedly to do so. The officers spoke to Winter and said he was visibly intoxicated. Police told him he was not allowed to return to the bar, and asked for his identification. Police said that Winter refused four requests for his identification and would not give the officers his name. When he continued to be uncooperative, he was taken into custody.
