DARIEN, Conn. -- Ox Ridge Elementary School in Darien honored veterans during a ceremony on Friday. It is the 19th year that Ox Ridge has held this celebration.
The tradition started in 1996 with three veterans going to the kindergarten class of Rita Ferri, who is now principal of Hindley School. Nineteen years later it has grown into a program almost 10 times its original size.
This year, 28 veterans were in attendance, their service ranging from World War II to the War on Terror (Iraq and Afghanistan). All branches of the military were also represented.
Moderated by Phil Kraft, Darien resident and head of both the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and National Veterans Services Fund, the veterans listened to patriotic songs sung to them by kindergarten students and were asked questions by fourth- and fifth-graders.
