Power has been restored to Brookfield Public Schools, but they will remain closed until midweek as crews continue cleaning up from last week’s storm that has led to dangerous roadways throughout the town.

School officials said that while Eversource and local DPW crews continue to restore power in the area, and power has been restored to the schools, “there remains multiple stretches of dangerous roadway and unsafe bus stops,” prompting officials to close the district on Monday and Tuesday, with an expected reopening on Wednesday, May 23.

Classes have been canceled for five days, forcing officials to push the last day of school to Friday, June 29 to meet the required state mandate of having 180 days of school. Graduation is still scheduled for Saturday, June 23.

As of 2:30 p.m. on Monday, 5,059 of Eversource’s 1,270,560 customers were reporting outages six days after the storm, including 1,771 Brookfield residents.

“As I shared yesterday, I am in the process of requesting from the Connecticut State Department of Education a one-time waiver excluding Brookfield from this requirement for the 2017-2018 school year,” Schools Superintendent John Barile stated. “Questions regarding high school graduation, activities or athletics should be directed to the administration or specific teams. Our K-8 school principals are already developing plans to address the schedule implications for the many spring and year-end activities.”
