Darien's Taylor Named State's Gatorade Volleyball Player Of The Year

DARIEN, Conn. -- Darien High School’s Izzy Taylor was named the Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year for volleyball.

Taylor, a junior, had 304 kills and 36 aces for Darien, leading the Blue Wave to the Class LL championship. Darien finished 25-2, with both losses coming to out of state schools at a tournament in New Jersey.

Taylor also had a .508 kill percentage and 179 digs. She was a first-team All-State selection, and won MVP honors in the state title game against Cheshire when she collected 22 kills, eight digs, six service receptions, an ace and one block.

"She is one of the best athletes that I’ve seen in the past five years,’’ Trumbull coach Tamara Deberry said. “She exudes athletic excellence. I’m excited to see what she brings to the table next year.”

Taylor has maintained a 3.41 GPA in the classroom and is active in the community. She is a youth volleyball instructor and a Little League Challenger Division assistant, has volunteered on behalf of her school’s bullying awareness day and Darien’s Safe Rides program.

Taylor has also coordinated a fundraising campaign to benefit Global Focus on Cancer’s effort to raise awareness about the disease.
